Semester in Madrid

By: Rose C.

I want to start by saying if you have the opportunity to study abroad, take it.

Studying abroad was something I dreamed of since high school - it was always part of my plan. But when I transferred universities my sophomore year, everything changed. Struggling to adjust to my new university, I worried that studying abroad would set me back academically and make it harder to get involved on campus. I convinced myself that staying was the best decision.

However, something kept nagging me, and I had a feeling that I was making the wrong decision. After much back and forth, I took a leap and applied to the study abroad program - just DAYS  before the deadline. Let me tell you, it truly changed everything!

Studying abroad did not set me back, it pushed me forward in more ways than I ever imagined. For the past 3 months, I have been living in Spain, immersing myself in a new culture, learning a new language and discovering a whole new level of independence. This experience has taught me lessons that go far beyond the classroom. From navigating unfamiliar cities to building connections with people from all over, I have been challenged to grow and open my mind.

Making this decision is not easy. Whether it is the financial aspect, the fear of falling behind academically, or even if it is stepping out of your comfort zone - it is normal to be hesitant. Even after I committed, I still had doubts. Weeks before leaving, I was extremely anxious and even considered backing out all together. The thought of going to a new country, basically alone, was terrifying. However, I managed to push through the fear, and I am so glad I did.

There has not been a single day where I have thought about going home or questioned my decision to study abroad. I have grown academically, made lifelong friends, and created memories I will cherish forever. Studying abroad has bonded us in so many ways, from trying new foods, getting lost in the city, traveling together, and navigating the journey all together. I am incredibly grateful for this past semester, and wouldn’t change a single thing about it. I know without a doubt that I made the right decision.
