Housing & Meals

Housing

Our housing ensures students are always well-connected to the best of the city. Set in vibrant neighborhoods, students will experience a cosmopolitan environment, and convenient access to supermarkets and pharmacies, multicultural restaurants and cafés, and easily accessible public transport.

Standard Housing:

Shared apartment: Includes a twin share bedroom in a shared apartment with other students. Apartments are within 45 minutes of Melbourne’s downtown by public transport. Stay connected with unlimited Wi-Fi access and enjoy hassle-free living with all utilities included.
Homestays provide students with the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in Melbourne's diverse culture. Melbourne is a multicultural city, and students will stay with families of various nationalities. These homes are located within a 45-minute to 1-hour public transport commute from 91��. The homestay experience includes breakfast and dinner (typically) 7 days a week. Students will have the freedom to come and go as they please while spending quality time with their host families, gaining firsthand insight into everyday life in Melbourne.

A note: The default criterion to assign housing is first-come, first-served; however, other factors may also be considered. If we cannot accommodate your first housing choice, we'll let you know before you arrive. Non-standard housing options require an additional fee that can be found in the program Dates and Fees.

Meals

Homestays: Students who live with host families receive two meals daily (usually breakfast and dinner) from Monday to Sunday. Other meals and/or any snacks are the responsibility of the student. Students can make use of the kitchen space at the homestay.
Shared Apartment: While meals are not included, students can prepare their own meals in the fully equipped kitchen. Melbourne has a vibrant food scene with fresh food markets providing an array of local fruit, vegetables, meats, spices and more. Students can also explore restaurants and cafés in surrounding areas. You’ll find Melbourne’s food is influenced from all corners of the globe!

Melbourne is famous for its’ fabulous food precincts, and fresh produce markets including Queen Victoria Market, South Melbourne market, Preston Market, Footscray Market, China Town in the city, little Vietnam in Richmond, little India in Dandenong, and the Middle East mile on Sydney Road in Coburg.

Academic Culture

In the Intern + Study program in Melbourne, 91�� offers a focused and immersive academic experience for students, blending rigorous coursework with hands-on learning opportunities to deepen understanding of both academic subjects and the local culture.

The required internship seminar features both in-person sessions and online asynchronous activities. This condensed format provides students with a concentrated schedule that accommodates for study and internship workplace schedules. It also encourages students to fully engage with the material and make the most of their time in Melbourne.

In addition to lectures, local field trips and co-curricular activities are also incorporated into the course design, providing students with firsthand exposure to the rich cultural heritage and diverse landscapes of Melbourne and its surroundings. These experiences not only enhance academic learning but also foster a deeper appreciation and understanding of the local context.

Arizona State University: Most ASU online courses are asynchronous. You may find yourself in classes with students from ASU, other American universities, and students from around the world. You’ll receive direct and individualized support from faculty, 100% online.

Class Format

Students participate in a 6-week 91�� part-time in-person internship and academic course taught in a hybrid learning environment, featuring both in-person class sessions and online asynchronous work. Class sessions, co-curricular excursions, and work hours may be scheduled Monday through Friday, and attendance is strictly enforced for all. To avoid falling behind, students should not plan personal travel away from the city during the work week. Instruction is supported and augmented online by 91��’s learning management system, Canvas.

ASU online courses meet in “sessions” that are 6-weeks long in the semester, and all work must be completed within the session dates regardless of when your other 91�� courses begin or end.

Grading

CIEE reports all final course grades to students’ home institutions using a U.S. letter grade equivalent scale of A-F. For 91��-administered courses, students’ grades are based on attendance, class engagement, homework, project work, presentations, and midterm and final examinations. Learning outcomes assessment is continuous through personal reflections, evaluation feedback, self-assessment, and requirements as set out in course syllabi. The embedded internship course will be assessed in assignments and activities, completion of 100-120 internship hours, and feedback from the internship supervisor.

ASU grading follows the same format and standards as ASU courses taught in-person. “Pass/fail” or “Audit” is not allowed for 91�� students.

Individual courses may have additional prerequisites; for 91�� courses, these are listed in the syllabi below. Students are responsible for having their own course approval conversations with their advisors. Your study abroad advisor and 91�� staff can help you understand your course options if you don't see a recommendation that fits your course needs.

To help you budget, keep in mind that students are responsible for the cost of international airfare, local transportation, books and supplies, visas, and personal expenses. In addition, your college or university may charge additional fees for study abroad, or may require you to receive a transcript via 91��'s School of Record, which carries an additional fee of $500.
