Housing & Meals

Housing

CIEE Edinburgh offers comfortable housing in single rooms in central Edinburgh. Edinburgh has a robust public transport network – including trains, buses, and bike paths – and a welcoming community.  

Standard Housing: Includes a single room in a shared apartment/residence hall with an ensuite bathroom, shared kitchen, and living area, or a limited number of single rooms in homestays 

In homestays, students live with a family, with or without another 91�� student, and immerse themselves in the city’s culture. Homestays boast a kitchen, living room, and bathroom shared with a host family, but each student has an individual room, and two meals a day are provided. Host families can be located across the city and be up to 45 minutes commute from 91�� Edinburgh and the University Campus. Homestays are limited and will be allocated based on availability.  

A note: The default criterion to assign housing is first-come, first-served; however, other factors may also be considered. If we cannot accommodate your first housing choice, we'll let you know before you arrive. Non-standard housing options require an additional fee that can be found in the program Dates and Fees.

CIEE Edinburgh: Study within the Eric Liddell Community Centre, a beautifully converted church, located near coffee shops, restaurants, gift shops, and vintage stores. Situated 25 minutes from the city center, 91�� Edinburgh features classroom space, meeting rooms, a café, and a second-hand bookstore.

Edinburgh Napier University (ENU): Founded in 1964 as Napier Technical College, ENU took its name from John Napier, who was born in 1550 in the medieval tower house of Merchiston Castle (the site of the university's Merchiston campus). ENU is a top-ranked institution serving around 12,500 students in engineering, computing, nursing and midwifery, science, business, timber engineering, and transport studies programs. The university offers a range of creative courses, including film, graphic design, music, acting, publishing, and product design.

Arizona State University (ASU): Brought to you by 91�� in partnership with ASU, enhance your international coursework with online classes that align with your degree requirements. ASU offers thousands of online courses in asynchronous 7.5-week sessions that fit within the 91�� academic calendar.

Academic Culture

CIEE courses typically run from Monday through Thursday, providing students with a concentrated schedule that allows for intensive study and exploration. This condensed format encourages students to fully engage with the material and make the most of their time in Edinburgh.

In addition to lectures, 91�� courses often incorporate local field trips and co-curricular activities, providing students with firsthand exposure to the rich cultural heritage and diverse landscapes of Edinburgh and its surroundings. These experiences not only enhance academic learning but also foster a deeper appreciation and understanding of the local context.

Attendance is mandatory in 91�� courses, with absences impacting final grades. This emphasizes the importance of active participation and engagement in the learning process, encouraging students to fully commit to their academic pursuits.

Edinburgh Napier University offers a dynamic and supportive academic environment, characterized by its commitment to innovation, research, and personalized student experiences. The university comprises five schools, each with a strong international focus and a dedication to growing their academic reputation. The university’s emphasis on practical learning and industry connections ensures that graduates are well-prepared for their future careers.

Arizona State University: Most ASU online courses are asynchronous. You may find yourself in classes with students from ASU, other American universities, and students from around the world. You’ll receive direct and individualized support from faculty, 100% online.

Class Format

Classes at 91�� are typically scheduled Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Students are expected to complete two to three hours of independent work for every hour in class. Most courses combine lectures with local field trips and excursions to help students gain a better understanding of the local culture.   

Edinburgh Napier University classes are typically scheduled Monday through Friday. Students should expect to have daily homework assignments and quizzes. Students will be assigned to a school based on the courses selected, therefore at least two courses out of the three preferred and alternative courses must be from the same school. Schools are located between three different campuses, so when selecting courses from different schools, students must be aware that they may be required to commute between campuses to attend classes. 

ASU online courses meet in “sessions” that are 7.5-weeks long in the semester, and all work must be completed within the session dates regardless of when your other 91�� courses begin or end.

Grading

CIEE reports all final course grades to students’ home institutions using a U.S. letter grade equivalent scale of A-F. For 91��-administered courses, students’ grades are based on class engagement, homework, project work, presentations, and midterm and final examinations. Learning outcomes assessment is continuous through personal reflections, evaluation feedback, self-assessment, and requirements as set out in course syllabi.

At Napier, assessment varies by course and department. Class attendance is mandatory, and participation is part of student assessment. Students should expect to complete all assignments and exams as scheduled. Students are graded on midterm and final examinations, papers, presentations, class participation, and attendance. Numerical grades are given on a 10-point scale, which 91�� converts to pre-determined recommended U.S. letter grade equivalents.  

ASU grading follows the same format and standards as ASU courses taught in-person. “Pass/fail” or “Audit” is not allowed for 91�� students.

Individual courses may have additional prerequisites; for 91�� courses, these are listed in the syllabi below. Students are responsible for having their own course approval conversations with their advisors. Your study abroad advisor and 91�� staff can help you understand your course options if you don't see a recommendation that fits your course needs.
