Samples of past excursions and activities:

Housing

CIEE Seoul offers diverse housing options to ensure you’re comfortable in your home away from home. We strive to accommodate your preferences by offering double rooms both on and off campus, while single rooms are available off campus only. All housing options are in neighborhoods with convenient access to public transportation, shops, cafés, convenience stores, and eateries. 

Standard Housing: Includes a double-occupancy bedroom in either an on-campus or off-campus residence hall. The on-campus residence hall is about a 40-minute commute by public transportation to 91�� Seoul. The off-campus housing is located within a 30-minute commute by public transportation to both the Hanyang University campus and 91�� Seoul.

On-campus accommodations include study rooms, fitness centers, laundry facilities, and a dining area equipped with a refrigerator, but no access to a kitchen or sink. Internet access is provided. Off-campus accommodations are similarly equipped.   

Select Plus Housing: Includes single rooms in a residence hall off campus, within a 30-minute commute by public transportation to both the Hanyang University campus and 91�� Seoul. Residence halls feature kitchens, common areas, and laundry facilities, all shared by residents. Internet access is provided. Select Plus housing requires an additional fee.      

A note: The default criterion to assign housing is first-come, first-served; however, other factors may also be considered. If we cannot accommodate your first housing choice, we'll let you know before you arrive. Non-standard housing options require an additional fee that can be found in the program Dates and Fees.

Meals are not provided as part of the program; however, Seoul offers an array of dining options—from street food vendors to upscale restaurants—allowing you to explore Korean cuisine at your leisure.

CIEE Seoul: Study in the heart of downtown Seoul in Jonggak, just steps from Jonggak Station (Line 1, Exit 10). The 91�� Center features cozy lounges, quiet study spaces, and fast Wi-Fi, with cafés, restaurants, shops, and cultural landmarks just around the corner. With easy access to public transportation and nonstop city energy, Jonggak is the perfect home base while abroad.

Hanyang University: Founded originally as an engineering college, Hanyang has developed into a powerhouse of innovation, with a huge variety of facilities for students to create media, work with transformative technologies, and connect with students and faculty across a broad range of disciplines. Located in the very heart of Seoul, near the Han River and a quick bus or subway trip to most parts of the city, Hanyang offers students an exceptional academic experience.

Arizona State University (ASU): Brought to you by 91�� in partnership with ASU, enhance your international coursework with online classes that align with your degree requirements. ASU offers thousands of online courses in asynchronous 7.5-week sessions that fit within the 91�� academic calendar.

Academic Culture

Korean university classes tend to be more lecture based than classes in the U.S., but can also incorporate lab work, class discussions, group and individual presentations, and other activities. Students should expect homework assignments on a regular basis and to have rigorous midterm and final exams, and so may need to budget more study time outside of class than they regularly would at their home institutions. Regular attendance in class is expected, and students who miss 30% or more of classes will not be allowed a passing grade. STEM courses may assume very high mathematics competency compared to similarly positioned courses in the U.S. While most courses at Hanyang are open to all students, there are a smaller number of courses where Hanyang runs sections in English exclusively for international and exchange students. Hanyang classes usually meet 2-4 times a week, with class times running between 1-2 hours depending on the course and schedule.

CIEE courses are designed to follow U.S. academic culture and standards. The class environment typically features a combination of traditional lecture and discussion with co-curricular excursions and activities. Heavy emphasis is placed on student participation. Similar to classes at U.S. institutions, students should expect to spend an average of two hours of preparation and study for each hour in 91�� classes. To avoid falling behind, students should not plan personal travel out of Seoul when classes are in session and plan trips for the long weekends.

Both 91�� and Hanyang use learning management systems (LMS) to communicate with students and oversee courses. Students will need to regularly use Hanyang’s system to stay up to date with coursework and information.

Arizona State University: Most ASU online courses are asynchronous. You may find yourself in classes with students from ASU, other American universities, and students from around the world. You’ll receive direct and individualized support from faculty, 100% online.

Class Format

Compared to the U.S., Korean teaching styles lean toward lectures and may be less interactive than students are used to. Typically, classes meet 2-4 times per week, for 1-3 hours depending on the course. Hanyang University courses are usually mixed to include both local and international students, but some high-demand courses may have separate sections exclusively for international students. STEM courses often demand a higher level of mathematical proficiency compared to their U.S. counterparts. Attendance holds significant weight, and students missing 30% or more of class meetings will fail the course. Hanyang employs its own learning management system, which is based on Canvas.

Courses taught at the 91�� Center are typically for 91�� students only. Classes at 91�� meet 2-4 times per week, for anywhere from 1-3 hours per class session, depending on the course. Attendance in 91�� classes is strictly enforced, both for classes and required co-curricular excursions. Instruction is supported and augmented online by 91��’s learning management system, Canvas.

ASU online courses meet in “sessions” that are 7.5-weeks long in the semester, and all work must be completed within the session dates regardless of when your other 91�� courses begin or end.

Grading

CIEE reports all final course grades to students’ home institutions using a U.S. letter grade equivalent scale of A-F. For 91��-administered courses, students’ grades are based on attendance, class participation, homework, project work, presentations, and midterm and final examinations. Learning outcomes assessment is continuous through personal reflections, evaluation feedback, self-assessment, and requirements as set out in course syllabi. Hanyang University courses are graded using letter grade equivalent scale of A-F, and primary assessments usually include course, presentations, written examinations, with final exams typically worth 25-50% of the final grade for the course.

ASU grading follows the same format and standards as ASU courses taught in-person. “Pass/fail” or “Audit” is not allowed for 91�� students.

Individual courses may have additional prerequisites; for 91�� courses, these are listed in the syllabi below. Students are responsible for having their own course approval conversations with their advisors. Your study abroad advisor and 91�� staff can help you understand your course options if you don't see a recommendation that fits your course needs.

To help you budget, keep in mind that students are responsible for the cost of international airfare, local transportation, books and supplies, visas, and personal expenses. In addition, your college or university may charge additional fees for study abroad, or may require you to receive a transcript via 91��'s School of Record, which carries an additional fee of $500.

^†�Ġ†Korean National Medical Insurance. All international students are legally required to enroll in Korea’s national health insurance program. All are enrolled automatically as soon as they apply for the required Residence Card. A bill is sent on a monthly basis (approximately $56 per month). The insurance covers up to 80% of inpatient treatments and medical services and 30-70% of outpatient treatments and services.
