How to Make Study Abroad a Reality for More High School Students

Studying abroad offers students a world of experiences in which they can explore diverse cultures, gain global perspectives, make new friends, and develop new skills for their future. Yet many high school students face significant barriers like financial constraints, academic concerns, or lack of awareness. As an educator, you have the power to grow the movement!

Spread the Word

Address Common Concerns (and Promote Scholarships)!

By providing clear information on costs, high school study abroad scholarships, and eligibility requirements, you can actively help your students navigate logistical challenges. Personalized mentorship and counseling can also support students facing personal or family concerns.

Focus on the Benefits of Studying Abroad

You should emphasize how international experiences enhance academic and career opportunities, improve intercultural skills, and lead to personal growth. Sharing success stories, alumni testimonials, and interactive/virtual presentations can inspire students. Check out our resources.

Collaborate

Partner With a Study Abroad Organization

Collaborating with international organizations can help make studying abroad an integral part of your high school. A study abroad nonprofit like 91°µÍø can offer resources, school visits, and professional development opportunities to help integrate study abroad into your high school.

Connect With School Stakeholders

School administrators, such as principals and vice principals, as well as school board members can all help shape school culture and set policies that can encourage students to study abroad. To gain their support, start by scheduling a meeting to discuss the benefits of international programs for high school students. Share success stories, alumni testimonials, and interactive/virtual presentations and suggest ways to integrate global education into the curriculum.

Follow Up With Alumni!

Finally, following up with students post-travel by encouraging them to share their experiences through presentations, blogs, or school events reinforces the value of study abroad and can inspire future participants. With the right support, more students can take advantage of these opportunities—broadening their horizons and shaping them into future global leaders.
